The Summit
The summit is modeled after the very successful Tutor/Mentor conference sponsored by the Tutor/Mentor Connection that takes place in Chicago twice a year. The object of the summit is to strengthen and inform the Indianapolis community of the availability and quality of tutor/mentor programs in the area. We will be sharing concepts to enhance tutoring and mentoring programs by networking with all stakeholders. We have planned workshops, a lunch networking & presentation and the day will conclude with a panel discussion, "A COURAGEOUS CONVERSATION ABOUT EDUCATION".
Who's There?
Our target audience for attending the conference includes current tutor and mentor volunteers, youth serving program professional, potential donors, Corporate leaders, parents, educators, and community political and faith base leaders We expect to have over 200 people in attendance.
About The Program
The tutor mentor summit is an annual Indianapolis summit that provides a venue for all area entities that support positive services to our youth, with a goal of making these entities stronger, known and familiar to the communities where they are located. The summit will allow the people in attendance to network, share, educate, encourage and empower each other and the community during and after the summit.
We are eager to build better public awareness of the need to promote volunteer based tutoring and mentoring programs in our communities. We are hopeful that the information that will be shared with and by parents, educators, legislators, business entities, students and anyone interested in helping youth will be so engaging that those in attendance will be ready, after being “Call to Act, Ready to Act”, by the end of the summit. We want to assemble a group of entities that leave the summit ready to take the steps necessary to make a bigger and better positive impact on the lives of the youth in Indianapolis.
Why are we doing this?
- Every 26 seconds a young person drops out of school in America.
- In 2011 – Indiana’s dropout rate was 26%, over ¼ of our young people in Indiana schools dropped out.
- Black juveniles are held in residential custody in the United States at twice the rate for Hispanics and five times the rates for whites. OJJDP, Juvenile Offenders and Victims, 1999 National Report p. 192-7. (The need for tutoring).
- Juveniles accounted for 16% percent of all violent crime arrests and 32% of all property crime arrests in 1999. They accounted for 54% of all arson arrests, 42% of vandalism arrests, 31% of larceny-theft arrests, and 33% of burglary arrests. http://ojjdp.ncjrs.org/ojstatbb/qa241.html
- FBI Statistics: Total number of arrests of teens 18 yrs old

What can you do?
Our plan: “A Call to Action – A time to Act” is our theme for the summit. We need you to join us to connect, inform and begin to build resources and relationships where we are working together to help more youth and youth servicing agencies in our Indianapolis communities.
Many people like to talk but we are ready to take action – come and tell us what you know, what you do and what we can start to do together. The end of the summit will be a panel discussion with various people from our community. Don’t miss this opportunity.
